Why is Face Fit Testing Essential?
If you wear a close-fitting respirator or “dust mask” (also known as respiratory protective equipment or RPE), face fit testing is a mandatory requirement for your health and safety.
According to Health and Safety Executive (HSE) data, nearly 12,000 UK deaths annually are linked to work-related respiratory diseases—many of which could have been prevented with the correct use of RPE, proper fit, and testing.
Is a Face Fit Test a Legal Requirement?
The simple answer is yes. As per the CoSHH Regulations 2002 and the PPE Regulations 1992, employers must ensure that RPE, including disposable or reusable dust masks, is both adequate and suitable for workers. The only way to demonstrate that the equipment is suitable is by performing a face fit test. These tests ensure that workers are properly protected when using respirators.
What Exactly is a Face Fit Test?
There are two main methods for conducting a face fit test:
- Qualitative Method: Commonly known as the “Taste Test,” this is a quick, simple, and cost-effective way to ensure that the RPE creates an effective seal around the wearer’s face. Ideal for both reusable and disposable half-face RPE offering particulate protection.
- Quantitative Method: A more precise method, used for more advanced testing needs, that measures the amount of leakage into the respirator.

Which Masks Need Face Fit Testing?
Any close-fitting respirator, including FFP3 masks or reusable half or full-face respirators, needs to undergo a face fit test. A risk assessment will determine if such RPE is required.
The CoSHH, CAR, and PPE regulations all specify the need for suitable and adequate RPE, and the only proven method to demonstrate its suitability is through a face fit test.
Our trusted partner can advise as to which face fit test you need for your role. Get in touch to find out more.
Do You Need to Be Clean Shaven for the Test?
Yes. To ensure an effective seal, wearers must be clean-shaven around the mask’s sealing area. Facial hair such as beards, stubble, or moustaches can interfere with the seal, drastically reducing the protection the RPE provides.
Who Can Conduct the Face Fit Test?
A competent person must carry out the face fit test. The HSE’s INDG479 outlines the necessary qualifications and experience for a competent face fit tester.
To guarantee your test is conducted properly, we recommend using a fit2fit accredited tester, which is a standard recognised by the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) and HSE. We can connect you with our partner, who offers accredited face fit testing services through their fit2fit program.
Want to Train Your Team to Perform Face Fit Tests In-House?
If you’d like to take control of your face fit testing, we also offer “Train the Tester” courses to certify individuals to perform face fit tests within your organisation.
These accredited courses, based on HSE’s INDG479 guidelines, ensure your team is fully equipped with the knowledge and skills to conduct face fit tests confidently and competently. Training includes:
- RPE selection and inspection
- Donning and doffing
- Fit test theory and limitations
- Applicable legislation
This course is perfect for small groups and will prepare you for BSIF fit2fit assessments.
