Turning Spare Diary Time Into Free Life-Saving Training for Charities

At Quinn’s Training Services, we believe unused time can still create real impact.

When one of our trainers has unexpected availability during the week, we don’t let that time go to waste. Instead, we use it to deliver free First Aid, Fire Safety, and Health & Safety awareness training to local charities and third sector organisations across South Wales.

It’s a simple idea: turn unused diary space into something genuinely valuable for the people and organisations who need it most.

What the Sessions Cover

These free sessions are designed to build real, practical confidence in the moments that matter most:

  • 🧯 Fire emergencies — what to do and how to respond safely
  • ❤️ Cardiac arrest response & AED (defibrillator) use
  • ⚠️ Everyday workplace safety awareness

This is all part of our ongoing commitment to social value — turning spare availability into action where it can genuinely help.

We’ve Already Seen the Impact: The Boomerang Charity Case Study

This isn’t just an idea — we’ve already put it into practice. At the end of 2024, we delivered a bespoke First Aid course for Boomerang Charity, a Cardiff-based organisation supporting people facing in-work poverty and hardship.

The session covered defibrillator use, choking response for both adults and children, and breathing emergencies, with attendees including Boomerang staff, friends of the charity, and members of Boomerang’s BNI Chapter.

We spoke to Stacey Gwilym, Chair of Trustees at Boomerang, about her experience on the day. She told us the training went far beyond her expectations, covering much more than just defibrillator use, and that our trainer worked carefully at the pace of the room, checking in throughout to make sure nobody was left behind. As she put it:

“Training like this saves lives, plain and simple.”

For Stacey, the session wasn’t just about ticking a box — it tied directly into her own experience of a family member’s cardiac emergency, and reinforced just how much confidence and preparation matter when it counts. She left feeling ready to pass what she’d learned on to the rest of the Boomerang team.

It’s exactly the kind of outcome we hope for every time we run one of these sessions: people walking away calmer, more confident, and ready to act if they’re ever needed.

Why We Do This

Charities and community organisations do vital work, often with stretched budgets and little room for extras like safety training. By putting our spare trainer availability to good use, we can help close that gap — at no cost to the organisations we work with.

If something happens and someone needs help, the difference between panic and confidence often comes down to training. We want more charities, volunteers, and community groups across South Wales — and beyond — to have access to that confidence.

Know a Charity That Could Benefit?

If you’re a charity or community organisation in South Wales (or further afield — we can also offer online sessions UK-wide) and would like to be considered for a future free session, we’d love to hear from you. Get in touch and we’ll add you to our outreach list.

And if you know an organisation that could benefit, please share this post or pass it along to your network.
