Safe Control of Operations (SCO) is the framework behind the UK gas network’s most safety-critical procedures — the system through which work is planned, authorised and carried out safely. The SCO Modules Explained
SCO training is modular, and the modules you need depend on your role on the network:
- SCO Core — the foundation module underpinning the scheme
- Modules 1 & 2 — Permit to Work (PtW) — the authorisation system for controlled work
- Module 3 — Non-Routine Operations (NRO) — planning and executing non-standard, higher-risk work
- Module 4 — Routine Operations (RO) — safe delivery of standard network operations
- Module 5 — Form of Authority (FoA) — the formal authorisation of individuals to undertake defined duties

Our new entrant courses are delivered face-to-face — at our Cardiff training centre or at your own site — with assessments included:

SCO Renewal Courses — Short, Focused, Flexible
Renewals are where we save your operation serious time. Each module renews in a short, focused session of roughly one and a half to two and a half hours — and every renewal is available face-to-face or by live e-classroom, so engineers can re-register without travelling:
- SCO Renewal Core — 2 hours
- SCO Renewal PtW — 1 hour 35 mins
- SCO Renewal RO — 2 hours
- SCO Renewal NRO — 2.5 hours
- SCO Renewal FoA — 1.5 hours

Renewals, yes — via live, tutor-led e-classroom. New entrant courses are face-to-face only, delivered at our Cardiff centre or at your site.
How long do the courses take?
New entrant courses run from around 4 hours (FoA, Core) up to 1.5 days for NRO. Renewals take between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per module.
Are EUSR registration fees included?
