Quick answer: if your clients, framework or accreditation (NERS, GIRS, WIRS, MURS) specify EUSR registration for cable work, take the EUSR-Endorsed route. What Delegates Will Learn
Both versions cover cable installation methods, equipment requirements, moving and positioning cable drums, PPE, winching and hand pulling, and laying and protecting cables. On completion, delegates will be able to:
- Learn from real incidents — discussing cable laying incidents and near misses from across the industry
- Select the right method and equipment for a variety of cable installation scenarios
- Handle cable drums safely — offloading from lorries or trailers and moving and positioning them using mechanical equipment and correct manual handling
- Use drum jacks, spindles and cable trailers correctly to wind and unwind cable drums
- Apply duct sizes and bending radii requirements for different cable types
- Follow winch safety rules — safe use of portable, capstan and larger winches, the winch rope/bond, and winch maintenance and movement
- Pull cable by hand safely using correct techniques and requirements
The Practical Assessment
This is a genuinely hands-on course. Alongside a short written exam, every candidate completes a practical assessment in a supportive environment, demonstrating that they can:
- Install a shorting end cap
- Install and remove a cable drum from a cable trailer
- Set out a safe route using the correct rollers and bellmouths
- Safely operate a winch to perform a short cable pull — winch sizes matched to your course requirements
Attempting the procedures under a tutor’s guidance builds real confidence — so when delegates use these skills in their own workplace, they’ve already done it properly once.

The course is delivered by one of our fully qualified tutors using a blend of theory and practice: group exercises, discussions, interactive presentations and practical demonstrations, designed to engage all learning styles. There’s flexibility on where and how it runs, too:

If you’re training at your own site, you’ll need a classroom space (tables, chairs, power, a screen or clear wall, and welfare facilities), sufficient space for the practical work, and the winching equipment itself — winch and drum trailer, cable drum with cable, winch bond, rollers, bellmouths, shorting end caps and hand tools. Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between the two versions?
The training and assessments are the same standard — the difference is the certification. The EUSR-Endorsed course leads to EUSR endorsement, which many utility clients and accredited contractors specify (EUSR registration and card fees apply in addition). The QTS version awards a Quinns Training Services certificate with no registration fees — ideal where EUSR isn’t contractually required.
Are there any prerequisites?
No formal qualifications are needed. Delegates need a good understanding of spoken and written English, and should bring photo ID to the course.
How is the course assessed?
A short written exam plus a practical assessment: installing a shorting end cap, handling a cable drum on a trailer, setting out a safe route with rollers and bellmouths, and safely operating a winch to complete a short cable pull.
Where does the course take place, and what do we provide?
Wherever suits you best: at your site on your own equipment, at our Cardiff training centre on our kit, or at another training venue — we have contacts who can help arrange kit delivered to different venues. If you’re hosting at your own site, you’ll need:
- A classroom space with tables, chairs, power, a screen or clear wall, and welfare facilities
- Sufficient space for practical demonstrations and assessments
- Winching equipment: winch (SEB/Grundowinch and/or capstan) and drum trailer, vehicles with suitable hitch points, winch rope/bond, a cable drum with cable, cable socks, shorting end caps, bellmouths and rollers, spinner/swivel, hand tools, ratchet straps and full PPE
